5 Key Considerations before relocating to a new city

Table of Contents

Relocation is a significant decision, whether within a country, region or continent and often entails important considerations. The reason for a move could be for a new job opportunity, schooling, marriage or just someone in need of a fresh start.  At first the decision could be exciting due to the thrill of the unknown but could also potentially be a daunting and nerve-wracking phase if proper measures are not put in place.

My aim in this article is to give the reader who may be in the process of moving some perspective that would greatly impact the ease of transition in the midst of uncertainties. Here are 5 key considerations which I have carefully selected. I have also included at the end of the article a free downloadable checklist which I believe will help one in the midst of relocation

1) Emotional and Mental Preparedness

The state of our emotions and mental health serves as a bedrock of our preparedness ahead of a relocation. A stable and balanced mental state would help one navigate the challenges of settling in without breaking down on difficult days. I have highlighted steps one can follow to emotionally and mentally prepare for a relocation.

  • Create a settling-in plan with timelines – carefully following a relocation settling-in plan with timelines is a necessary tool to guard against anxiety on the various tasks that need to be put in place within a short period of time. Please see downloaded guide here
  • Set small goals of settling in , week on week, such as focusing on one segment of the plan meticulously
  • Research and establish a support system before relocating. This entails searching for old friends who may be in your new location (Facebook and instagram would be a great tool for this), asking friends for referrals to trusted individuals, joining communities through Facebook, WhatsApp etc., searching for events of interest using tools such as Eventbrite.
  • Start mentally envisioning a beautiful and thriving life in the new community before moving.
  • Have an open mind and a willing heart to adapt and welcome the changes wholeheartedly
2) Finances

Once your emotional and mental state has been put in place, the next key consideration is a financial audit particularly for individuals who will be relocating for reasons other than a new job opportunity.

 I have highlighted steps one can follow to financially prepare for a relocation.

  • Research on the cost of living. This can be achieved by searching for local groceries stores, departmental stores, furniture shops, restaurants etc. to get a sense of the average cost for essentials.
  • Explore Facebook groups for discussion on cost of living
  • Create an initial budget. I have attached a template I prepared for myself on this.
  • Research on the job market and how long does it take me to secure a job, or if entrepreneurship should be considered
  • Setting short to medium term financial goals and how the new city will impact this.
3) Housing and Living Arrangements:

Housing is another key consideration that needs to be put in place before relocating. I would recommend thorough research and due diligence on the neighborhood of choice as new buildings could be located in an unsafe and crime filled area which cannot be discovered in pictures.

  • Research on housing costs, structure and neighborhood
  • Speak to friends who may be living in the new city, or friends of friends who have peculiar information on the city
  • Confirm the utilities and infrastructures provided as various locations may have peculiarities
  • If the intention is to purchase a home or rent, research on the legal implications.
4) Lifestyle and Adaptation

once the emotional and mental state, finances and housing considerations have been attained, the next focus should be on lifestyle in the new city. Will you need to make significant changes to your current lifestyles? and would there be a need for an upgrade or downgrade.

 This can be answered with the following steps;

  • Research on the new city’s lifestyle, safety and culture and find one which aligns with your preferences and values
  • Research on social (Clubs, Churches, Mosques, temples etc.) and networking activities
  • Research on gyms, parks and other public utilities
  • If applicable, research on healthcare facilities and educational options for you and your family (if applicable), including the quality of local schools as understanding educational options will help you choose the best environment for your children’s learning and developments. Top Tip: Research on School ratings, proximity, extracurricular programs, and special education resources together with the availability of daycare or preschool options if needed.
5) Transportation infrastructure

Efficient transportation options are often underrated but are essential for a smooth daily routine.

I have listed key steps to be followed to achieve this;

  • Research on the local transit system, traffic patterns, and available commuting options will affect your quality of life and daily logistics.
  • Research on the efficiency of Public transportation options (buses, trains, etc.), traffic conditions, availability of biking or walking paths, and parking facilities.
  • Research the average commute time to work, school, or other regular destinations.
  • In the event public transportation is not efficient, research on the cost of cars, insurance, driver’s license

These 5 considerations are a good starting point for an individual in the process of relocation. Have I missed any other key consideration? I look forward to your comments
